Abstract

897,531. Respiratory appliances. KIDDE CO. Ltd., WALTER, and BRITISH EUROPEAN AIRWAYS CORPORATION. Nov. 3, 1959 [Nov. 6, 1958; May 27, 1959], Nos. 35701/58 and 18032/59. Class 81 (2). A head harness for a breathing mask is stowed on the mask so that, in an emergency, the mask may be held against the face, by one hand, while the harness is pulled into position by the other. Preferably the mask, which may be of any known type, has a rigid casing- member 11, Fig. 5, against which the head harness 6 is stowed, being retained by flap members 10 mounted on sprung hinges 12. The rear part of the harness is attached to a knob 5, normally held in a clip 14, so that while the mask is held against the nose and mouth with one hand, the other hand can grip the knob 5 and draw it rearwardly over the top of the head, so placing the harness in position. The elastic harness straps 7, 8 are preferably attached to the mask at a single point so that, as the harness is fitted into position, they move around this point without disturbing the mask. In the proposed housing for the mask assembly, the mask 10, Fig. 6, is held against an elastic support 21 by a flexible door 20. A clip 23 on the door is engaged by a pivoted pawl 22 and is prevented from moving clear by a knob 4 on the end of a rod 24. The latter may, however, be disengaged either by being pulled outwards manually or by being moved out by the oxygen supply pressure, received through conduit 28, bearing on a plunger 26. When this plunger has been so moved, the oxygen passes through duct 29 to the tube 3, leading to the face mask.
