NOSE CLIP Filed Jail. '7, 1955 F/GZ.
Patented June 22, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE NOSE CLIP Reginald Arthur Laxton, Enfield, England Application January 7, 1953, Serial No. 329,969
3 Claims. 1
My invention relates to nose clips used for closing the nasal respiratory passages by compressing the sides of the nostrils against the intermediate septum for the purpose of preventing water or other foreign substances from entering these passages during the time that the wearer of the device is swimming, diving or engaged in any other activity or work in which such prevention is desirable or advisable.
According to the invention the nose clip comprises a piece of spring wire having a cross-piece for engaging under the septum, curved pieces extending downwardly from the ends of the crosspiece and then rearwardly, outwardly and upwardly, upwardly and inwardly extending limbs connected at their lower ends to the rear ends of the curved pieces, and forwardly curving parts at the upper ends of said limbs.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows an elevation of the device;
Figure 2 shows another elevation;
Figure 3 is a plan view of Figure 1;
Figure 4 shows the device attached on a nose.
Referring to Figures 1 to 4, a piece of spring material, about 4 to 6 inches in length to suit the requirement, is bent in the shape of the letter U as at l, adapted to form a horizontal support for the nose; the two arms of the U are then bent in the form of two semi-circular arcs 2 and 3, followed by two ring-like members 4 and which are shown as open rings but may be bent to close the rings.
The cross piece i has its ends connected to the curved pieces 2, 3, which extend downwardly and outwardly as shown in Figure 1 and extend rearwardly and upwardly as shown in Figure 2 with the rear upper ends connected to limbs l, 8 that extend from the pieces 2, 3, upwardly and inwardly. The upper ends of these limbs are bent forwardly and then downwardly and rearwardly to form the rings 4, 5 the ends of which are in close proximity with the limbs.
The spring steel material may be coated with any suitable material such as latex, plastic or other protective substance to prevent the iron from coming in contact with the skin.
A band of suitable material such as rubber or silk tape may be used to fasten the clip to the head, as shown at 9 in Figure 4.
Referring to Figure 4 in particular-the nose clip is attached to the nose by slipping the rings 4 and 5 on either side of the nose holding the U piece 1 such that its arms are below the rings 5 and 6, and then pushing the U part under the nose to form the support so that the U part is horizontally below the nose, the two arms point ing towards the face, the semi-circular arcs 2 and 3 following the back of the nostrils and the ring- like members 4 and 5 pressing the nostrils against the central septum.
I claim:
1. A nose clip comprising a piece of spring wire having a cross-piece for engaging under the septum curved pieces extending downwardly from the ends of the cross-piece and then rearwardly, and upwardly, upwardly and inwardly extending limbs connected at their lower ends to the rear ends of the curved pieces, and forwardly curving parts at the upper ends of said limbs.
2. A nose clip as claimed in claim "1 wherein the forwardly curving parts are continued downwardly and rearwardly into close proximity with said limbs.
3. A nose clip as claimed in claim 1 wherein the cross-piece is curved from its ends forwardly.
