Abstract

A tunnel is supported or lined by a network of members arranged to form two series of helixes of opposed hand. A row of members is placed against the tunnel wall, each member having one end lying on a cross-section of the tunnel at right angles to the axis of the tunnel, being inclined at 45 degrees to the tunnel axis, and being spaced from adjacent members by a distance equal to half its length. The row of members is supported by a ring engaging each member at its centre. A second row of members is erected by fixing one end of each member of the second row to the centre of a member of the first row, and by fixing the centre of each member of the second row to the end of the next member of the first row. After a third row of members is similarly erected, the structure is self supporting and the ring is removed. The lining is completed by adding rows as necessary and by inserting cross bracing in the spaces between the members. The members may be steel tube or H sections or reinforced concrete.
