Abstract

A pigmented dextran is produced by mixing a plastic mass of dextran, water and pigment on heated mixing rolls, one of which is heated to a temperature above and the other to a temperature below the boiling point of water and stripping the mass when mixed from the cooler roll. Water may be caused to drip on to the surface of the hotter roll adjacent the point of contact of the plastic mass with the roll. A plasticizer for the dextran, such as dibutyl or dioctyl phthalate or tricresyl phosphate may be incorporated in the plastic mass. Suitable pigments are iron oxide, titanium dioxide, chrome yellow or orange, carbon black or chrome green. The dextran used may be obtained by inoculating an aqueous sucrose nutrient medium with Leuconostoc mesenteroides or L. dextranicum or with dextransucrose It may be pigmented in the "native" state or after hydrolysis to a lower molecular weight. The pigmented mass may be dried and ground to a fine powder for use in paints or enamels, or may be used as a paste for use as a filler material or pigment for addition to emulsion paints and enamels.
