Abstract

Coloured polystyrene is prepared by polymerizing a mixture of a liquid styrene or solution of polystyrene in styrene with a colour concentrate comprising polystyrene and a styrene-insoluble, heat-stable pigment. 10-25 per cent of pigment, e.g. titanium dioxide, copper phthalocyanine, zinc sulphide, mixtures of barium sulphate and zinc sulphide, cadmium sulphide, carbon black and ferric ferrocyanide, is milled on hot rolls into plasticized polystyrene and the concentrate is dissolved in the styrene to give a liquid composition of a viscosity of at least 35 centipoises at 25 DEG C. Plasticizers, e.g. dioctyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate and dibutyl phthalate, mould-releasing agents, e.g. butyl stearate, and soya bean oil may be added and the product employed directly or ground as a moulding powder for articles such as combs.
