Abstract

Improved pigmentation of highly polymerized linear polyesters and superpolyamides, is obtained by first incorporating substantial quantities of the pigment, e.g. up to 50 per cent, with a low molecular weight polymer, which may be of the same or different composition as the high polymer to be pigmented, and then mixing this strongly pigmented composition with a melt of linear high polymer in sufficient quantities to obtain the pigmentation required. Pigments specified are TiO2, iron oxide, cadmium pigments, chromium pigments, carbon black; organic colouring matter may also be added, e.g. phthalocyanines, indigo dyes. In examples (1) 500 gs. TiO2 are ball milled with 500 gs. caprolactam; 25 gs. aminocaproic acid are added and the mixture is polymerized in presence of nitrogen at 180 DEG C. and then at 200-220 DEG C. 0.25 Per cent of the product obtained is added to caprolactam which is then further polymerized and the product is spun into filaments in which the titanium dioxide is found to be uniformly distributed; (2) 1 per cent of the polymeric intermediate obtained as in (1) and containing 27.3 pts. iron oxide red, 13.6 pts. iron oxide yellow and 9.1 pts. carbon black is added to a melt of polymerized caprolactam; the melt on spinning gives brown coloured filaments; (3) 700 gs. caprolactam, 207 gs. red cadmium pigment, 10 gs. carbon black are mixed together and 27.4 gs. 30 per cent phthalocyanine added; the mixture is polymerized at 180 DEG C. while adding 20 gs. aminocaproic acid and then added to the amount of 9 per cent to a caprolactam melt. (4) In this example the pigments employed are those described in Specification 520,199 and German Specification 565,426; (5) a mixture of caprolactam, TiO2 and aminocaproic acid is used to pigment polymerized polyhexamethylene adipate melt.
