Abstract

A stable dispersion of a coloured or fluorescent pigment and a synthetic polyamide is made by milling together in the presence of water a coloured or fluorescent pigment and a synthetic polyamide in the form of fine particles. The water may contain alcohol, acetone, urea or inorganic salts and dispersing agents, e.g. disodium methylene-bis-(naphthalene-2-sulphonate), during the milling. The pigments used, of which many are specified, may be organic or inorganic. The products may be used for coating paper, card or textiles or for colouring granules, chips or flakes of polymeric materials prior to moulding or extrusion, e.g. they may be added to polyesters or polyamides prior to spinning. In the examples, fine particles of polyhexamethylene adipamide or polycaproamide are milled with copper phthalocyanine, copper octaphenyl phthalocyanine, carbon black, cadmium sulphide, a mixture of cadmium sulphide, titanium dioxide and carbon black, cobalt hexadecahydrophthalocyanine, nickel hexahydrophthalocyanine, copper tetratolyl mercaptophthalocyanine, the 1:2-chromium complex of 2-carboxy-benzene-azo-11-(o-tolyl) -31-methyl-51-pyrazolone, perylene3:4:9:10 - tetracarboxydi - (31:511 - dimethyl phenyl imide), aniline black, chlorinated copper phthalocyanine, copper tetraphenyl phthalocyanine, 3:31-azopyrene, ultramarine, cadmium sulpho-selenide, iron oxide, chromium oxide, the bis-iminazole from perylene-3:4:9:10-tetracarboxylic acid and o-phenylene diamine, the nickel complex of 4-bromo-1:2-bis-(21-hydroxy - 11 - naphthylidene) - phenylene diamine, 1:4:12:12 - tetrachlorophthalo perinone, 2:8 - di - (211,611 - dimethyl phenyl) - anthra - 11:91 (N): 101 (N): 5 - dipyridazone, 2:5 - dichlorobenzeneazo - 21 - naphthol - 31 - carboxyaniline, 2-nitro-4-methoxybenzeneazo-21 - acetoacetaniside, cobalt phthalocyanine, the iron complex of 1-nitroso-2-naphthol, bis quinacridone, perylene - 3:4:9:10 - tetracarboxy - di - (41 - methoxydiphenylimide), 4:41 - diethoxythioindigo, 1:5 - dibenzoylaminoanthraquinone, 1:5 - di - (p - methoxybenzoylamino) - 4:81 - dihydroxyanthraquinone, 4:8 - dibromo anthranthone, benzeneazo-b -naphthol, and 5-hydroxy-1:4-di-p-toluidino anthraquinone, the resultant compositions being mixed with polyhexamethylene adipamide or polycaproamide chips, melted and spun into yarns, or moulded, or mixed with casein and used for coating card or paper.
