Abstract

Coloured polyamide masses are produced by incorporating with molten nylon a dispersion of a pigment in a linear polyester or polyesteramide and then cooling. The mass may be formed to shape before, during or after cooling. Suitable linear polyesters may be obtained from dibasic organic acids and glycols or esterforming derivatives of these, e.g. ethylene glycol and adipic acid. Suitable polyesteramides are described in Specifications 561,104 and 561,108. Polyesters or polyesteramides which have been modified with a diisocyanate as described in Specification 553,733 may also be used, provided that they are still fusible. Suitable pigments are titanium dioxide, carbon black, copper phthalocyanine pigments, cadmium yellows, lead chromates, iron oxides, chromium oxides, ultramarine. Extenders such as blanc fixe, lithopone or zinc oxide, may also be used. The pigment may be stirred into the molten polyester or polyester-amide or may be worked into the solid material in a mixer. The dispersion may be stirred into the molten nylon and the melt cooled or particles of nylon may be coated with the dispersion and then melted and cooled. Volatile organic liquids may be used to facilitate the application of the dispersions as coatings. In examples: (1) Monastral Fast Blue B and a polyester-amide from adipic acid, ethylene glycol and monoethanolamine are mixed in an internal mixer. The dispersion is diluted with an ethanol-water mixture to a smooth paste, which is agitated with chips of poly-hexamethylene adipamide to coat them. The coated chips melt to a uniformily coloured blue mass which may be melt spun to fibres which may be cold drawn. (2) A reddish-brown melt which may be extruded or spun to shape is formed as in example (1), using iron oxide pigment in place of Monastral Blue. (3) Similar to examples (1) and (2), but employs Cadmium Red as the pigment.
