Abstract

Thermoplastic synthetic resins may be coloured by incorporating therein colour concentrates prepared by applying frictional and/or shearing forces to a mixture of a pigment and a dispersing agent, said agent being a solid material having capillaries in its surfaces the axial linear extents of which are greater than the largest linear extents of the pigment particles, at a temperature below the softening point, if any, of said agent whereby the pigment is incorporated in capillaries in the surface of said agent. Specified resins are polyvinyl chloride and polyolefins. The pigments may be organic or inorganic, preferably of size 5 to 20 millimicrons. Specified dispersion agents are plastics, chalk, barium sulphate and calcium and magnesium carbonates, and the volume of the capillaries is preferably at least equal to the volume of the pigment to be incorporated. In examples colour concentrates are prepared by incorporating (1-3) cadmium yellow and phthalocyanine blue in polyvinyl chloride and (4) carbon black and phthalocyanine green in chalk, and the concentrates so obtained blended with basic formulations comprising polyvinyl chloride, stabilizer and lubricant.
