Abstract

Pigments are uniformly dispersed in fibreforming polymers by forming an intimate mixture of the pigment in pellet or powder form with a polymer which is lower melting than, but compatible with, the fibre-forming polymer and which is also in pellet or powder form, heating the mixture and masticating it while in a soft plastic condition to effect uniform distribution of the pigment and form a colour concentrate, solidifying and comminuting the concentrate, mixing the resulting concentrate particles with particles of the fibre-forming polymer, and melt-blending the resulting mixture. Specified fibre-forming polymers are polyesters, polyamides and polyureas. The lower-melting polymer preferably has its monomeric units linked by the same chemical linkages as the fibre-former. In examples the polymers are either both polyesters or both polyamides and the pigment is carbon black or a proprietary red pigment.
