Abstract

Coloured vinyl aromatic polymers are produced continuously by adding a stream of molten colour concentrate, comprising colouring material and polymer, to a stream of molten polymer in controlled proportions in a heated mixing zone and continuously removing the coloured product. The polymers may be derived from, for example, styrene, p-chlorostyrene, p-ethylstyrene, p-ethoxystyrene, vinyl naphthalene and vinyl carbazole, and 0.05 to 5 per cent of a dye, e.g. Anthraquinone Blue Sky Base, Oil Red O, and Oil Yellow 515, or 10-50 per cent of a pigment, e.g. black or brown iron oxide, or titanium dioxide may be used as the colouring material.
