Abstract

Pigmented polymers of ethylene or copolymers containing at least 90 per cent by weight of ethylene are prepared by intensively mixing the polymer under pressure in a totally enclosed chamber until the temperature has risen above the melting-point, adding the finely-divided pigment to the molten material and mixing the pigment therewith in the chamber under pressure, e.g. at least 25 p.s.i. at least until the temperature of the mixture is above the melting-point of the polymer. The polymer may be mixed with the pressure released after melting and prior to the addition of the pigment, and the mixing may be stopped during the addition of pigment and gradually resumed. After mixing the pigment and polymer under pressure the pressure may be released and the mixing continued. Carbon black, ultramarine blue, cadmium red, phthalocyanine green, and titanium dioxide are mentioned and amounts of 0.01 to equal parts of pigment to polymer may be used. A suitable mixer has an enclosed chamber fitted with rotors having different peripheral speeds, e.g. a Banbury type mixer having a pressure head or ram inserted in the hopper.
