Abstract

A method of master-batching pigments for further use in synthetic resins comprises mixing from 40-75 parts of pigment with 60 to 25 parts of synthetic rubber. The synthetic rubber may be a polymer of 100-60 parts by weight of butadiene and 0-40 parts by weight of styrene. The pigment may be carbon black, metal powder, titanium dioxide, iron oxyhydrates, ultramarine blue, other oxidic and sulphidic inorganic pigments, azo pigments, vat dyestuffs, phthalocyanine, bisoxacine, perylene tetracarboxylic acid and quinacridone duestuffs. The pigments are incorporated in the polymer in a kneading or roller churn at a temperature between 50 DEG and 80 DEG C. and then rekneaded at a temperature between 70 DEG and 90 DEG or even higher until a homogenous mixture is obtained. Up to 35% (calculated on the weight of the polymer) of a fatty acid or salt of a fatty acid containing 12 to 20 carbon atoms, such as stearic acid or aluminium tristearate, may be added to improve dispersion. The mixture is then comminuted or granulated and added to a polymer such as natural or synthetic rubbers, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyethylene, polypropylene or polystyrene in the quantity desired. Specifications 828,052, 851,976 and U.S.A. Specification 2,844,484 are referred to.
