Pigment preparations are prepared by mixing pigments, liquid medium with little or no dissolving effect on the pigment, optionally dispersants, and polymers, mechanically dispersing the mixture of pigment and polymer in the liquid medium and removing the liquid medium, wherein before, during and/or after the addition of the pigment to the polymer, the polymer used in solid, powdered form, is incipiently swollen in the medium and after mechanical dispersing, the surface adhesion of the dispersed particles to the swollen particles is fixed by removal of the liquid medium. An organic solvent or mixture capable of swelling or dissolving the polymer is preferably used, with a solution retarder. As dispersants, the following may be used, oxides or mixed oxides of silicon, aluminium, titanium, iron (III) or zirconium, and/or silicates of aluminium, calcium, magnesium and/or barium. In the examples, silico with carbon black, cobalt green or Milori blue (alkali containing iron cyanide), a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, and optionally a wetting agent such as a sodium alkylnaphthalne sulphononic acid are dispersed in a mixture of water and ethyl acetate, the dispersion is stirred and the water and free solvent removed, by evaporation for instance. The resulting pigment preparations are suitable for dying synthetic fibres or water-proof lacquers, colouring plastic products and special printing pastes.
