Abstract

<PICT:0807006/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0807006/IV (a)/2> Concentrated latex is obtained by allowing latex containing a creaming agent to stand in a tank to form an upper cream layer and a lower serum layer, and separating the cream by withdrawing it through a vertically adjustable pipe situated inside the tank. A creaming tank 10, Fig. 1, has a pipe 11 for introducing latex containing a creaming agent, and a vertically adjustable pipe 14 for withdrawing the cream slidable within an outlet pipe 12. The upper end of the pipe 14 is provided with a funnel 15 having radial vanes 17 and secured by a bracket 16 to a screw 18. The latter passes freely through a support 21, Fig. 3, and carries a nut 24 rotatable on a ball-bearing 25 and held against vertical movement by a flanged ring 26 secured to the support 21. A lock-nut 27 may be tightened against the nut 24. When it is desired to raise or lower the screw 18 and the pipe 14 the lock-nut 27 is separated from the nut 24, and the latter is rotated by arms 23. In a creaming operation latex containing a creaming agent is admitted through the pipe 11 to a level just below that of the funnel 15 (as shown in full lines). After a few days but before a thick butter layer can form the funnel 15 is lowered to a height just above the interface between the cream and the serum, and the cream is run off through pipes 14, 12. This procedure is repeated after each of a number of further standing periods, and when no further cream is obtainable the funnel 15 is lowered to the interface. The lock-nut 27 is then tightened against the nut 24, and the latter is again operated and now rotates the screw 18 and the vanes 17 which are curved to push the cream into the funnel 15. After removal of all the cream the serum is withdrawn through the pipe 11.
