Abstract

990,866. Gravity-separation apparatus; sandcones ; classifying granular materials. B. LEY. April 10, 1962 [April 19, 1961], No. 13746/62. Headings B1D and B2H. A mixture of sands, or sand and dirt, and water, is pumped through an inlet pipe 17 to a vertically-movable cone 3. Lighter sand or dirt flows out with the water at 21, 19. When a predetermined weight of heavier sand in the cone 3 is exceeded, the cone moves downwards, raising, as it does so, the inner ends of levers 5 from which it is suspended about fulcrums 6 by links 4. Segment-shaped plates 8 secured at the inner ends of the levers 5, and bearing under a stop 9 on a valve rod 10, thereupon raise the rod 10 to withdraw a valve cone 11 from a discharge opening at the lower end of the cone 3. Surplus water can be tapped off through a perforate pipe end 22 connected at 20 to a combined drain and water-feed system. The apparatus is mounted on a mobile stand 1. For sorting a mixture of sands in water according to grain sizes the mixture is fed into cone 3 as before. Then water is introduced at 20, 23 into the sand at a pressure which ensures that the large-grained sand remains in the cone, whilst smaller grains are discharged with water at 21, 19 (for further sorting in similar apparatus). For washing dirty sand, water is introduced at 20, 23 (after draining at 19, and 22, 20), and leaves with dirt at 19. Additional features are provided in Fig. 3 (not shown) for classifying according to grain size. The rod 10 is made hollow, and additional water can be fed down it to emerge through one or more of a number of circular discharge tubes arranged around it. A float with a horizontal baffle, and supporting a feed ring, may be secured adjustably around the upper end of the hollow rod.
