Abstract
807,003. Shoe upper conforming machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd., and CHAMBERS, F. F. March 1, 1957 [March 2, 1956], No, 6555/56. Class 17(1) A shoe upper conforming machine having means for supporting an upright Veldtschoen, a plurality of grippers 11 to pull the upper U down 'to the last L, toe embracing wipers 13 to move downwardly and, on release of the upper by the grippers, to close so as to unge the upper into the crease angle between the last and a projecting portion of a sole member I to form a flange, and means for pressing together the sole margin and the flange, has a pad 2 to move downwardly with the wipers to press the upper against the last in the region of the toe cap line, and a band-like member 10 to move downwardly with the pad and perform a heightwise wiping action on the upper around the toe whilst shielding the upper from engagement with the edges of the wipers. The machine is generally similar to those described in Specifications 598,164 and 621,322, with heated wipers &c. The shaped rubber pad 2 is moved down yieldably with the wipers and engages and holds the upper before the wipers reach their lowest level, the flexible member 10 preventing marking of the upper by the heated wipers. Member 10 which is formed of heat resisting plastic material, e.g. hard rubber, is of U- shape and is chamfered at the lower edge 20. The member is positioned heightwise by engagement with plate 4 which carries pad 2, and is yieldably clamped to pad 2 by means of a rod 12 passing through the pad, springs 18 permitting the member to conform to the outline of the shoe. Member 10 extends below pad 2 and below the initial position of wipers 13 relative to the pad, and as it moves down wipes the upper and prevents contact of the wipers with the upper. When member 10 comes to rest the wipers continue to move downwardly, and finally close inwardly, just beneath member 10, to form the crease. Member 10 may be reinforced and held in a somewhat pointed condition by leaf springs pressing outwardly against its inner surfaces.
