Abstract

806,913. Measuring instruments. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd., S. March 1, 1956 [March 3, 1955], No. 6374/55. Class 37. In a moving iron meter a ferromagnetic member 11, 12 is mounted on a spindle 3 rotating in a plane about its axis, two magnetically-soft polepieces 24, 25 energized by coils 22, 23 causing the member to rotate, and are arranged to be jointly adjustable in the plane of the member to facilitate calibration. The polepieces 24, 25 are held to a base plate 17 by soft iron screws 19, 20 the plate 17 having an upturned portion 18 which forms a cooperating pole for the movable member. Each of the screws 19 passes through a nut 21 and the casing 1 and is held in position by nut 28, the base plate 17 being supported under the spindle by a depression 29 which presses against the casing. The spindle 3 is mounted in bearings between strips 4, 5, supported by pillars 6, 7 which also serve as the terminals of the instrument. The pointer 8 is held normally in the position shown by a weight 13 and the ratio of the current passing through the coils 22, 23 is governed by a resistor which may be varied by a float in a fluid container, Fig. 3 (not shown). A wheel 14 loosely mounted between washers 15, 16 damps the movement.
