Abstract

A semi-solid composition for use as a vehicle for a substance to be absorbed through the skin comprises an a -polyolefine gel and, distributed through the gel as a dispersion or discontinuous liquid phase, a terpenic solvent. Specified a -polyolefines are polyethylene and polypropylene; specified terpenic solvents are cineole, eucalyptol, limonene, oil of turpentine. The terpenic solvent may contain active ingredients such as spiramycin and the absorbability of the composition may be increased by including a wetting agent such as "Tween 80" (Registered Trade Mark). The composition may be prepared by adding the terpenic solvent to a melted a -polyolefine or by heating the solid polyolefine with the terpenic solvent, mixing, and thereafter cooling the homogeneous liquid to form a gel.
