Abstract

A chemical plating bath of the nickel cation-hypophosphite anion type contains a molybdenum compound to inhibit decomposition of the bath. The preferred molybdenum compound is molybdic acid which can be introduced into the bath as such or in the form of molybdic anhydride or sodium or ammonium molybdate: other decomposition inhibitors which may be used in conjunction with molybdic acid are arsenious acid (or its anhydride), arsenic acid (or its anhydride), cacodylic acid, sodium arsenite, cadmium acetate, cadmium sulphate, hydroxylamine, hydroxylamine sulphate, hydrazine, hydrazine hydrate, hydrazine sulphate, phenol and sodium phenoxide. The bath may be formulated using nickel chloride, sulphate or acetate to provide the nickel ions; sodium hypophosphite or hypophosphorous acid to provide the hypophosphite ions; acetic acid or propionic acid to act as buffer; and glycollic acid as chelating agent.
