Abstract
Polychlorotrifluoroethylene is modified by treating a part or the whole of the surface thereof with a solution of an alkali or alkaline earth metal in an anhydrous non-metallic solvent therefor which wets the polychlorotrifluoroethylene surface. The metal may be lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium, barium or magnesium. The solvent may be liquid ammonia, pyridine or benzophenone. The treatment renders the polymer capable of being bonded to other materials with an adhesive. Adhesion may be improved by further treating the polymer with an oxidizing agent such as nitric acid.
