A glass furnace comprises a bath 2 having an orifice 4 communicating with a chamber 5 into which molten glass can flow vertically and from there it passes through a lateral aperture 6 in a continuous stream the flow being controlled by a metal rod 7 abutting the upper edge of the aperture 6 and movable horizontally to obstruct the orifice 4, the major portion of the rod 7 remaining outside the chamber so that it is cooled by virtue of its conductivity. The rod may be rectangular in cross-section.
