A higher voltage impregnated paper insulated cable is provided with a condenser cone at a termination or stop joint by removing insulation from the end of the conductor 12 so as to leave the end of the insulation 22 in the form of a truncated stepped cone, applying to the end of the conductor a convolute paper wrapping 13 in the middle of which is inserted a sheet of metal foil to form a cylindrical electrode 15 of shorter axial length than the wrapping, the diameter of the wrapping being equal to that of the first step 5, applying a second convolute wrapping 16 and electrode 17 over the surfaces of the step 5 and wrapping 13, and applying further wrappings and electrodes until the step 2 is covered and the outer wrapping 21 has a diameter equal to that of the insulation 22. Further wrappings 24, 27, embodying electrodes and shaped to provide a stress relief cone profile, may be applied over the insulation 22 and wrapping 21. An outer electrode 31 connected to the cable screen 23 by wire wrapping 32 may be applied over wrapping 27. Each of the wrappings 13, 16, 19, 20, 21 may be spaced from the risers 6-10 of the steps to form an annular groove 14 which is fitted with a narrow insulating tape. Each groove 14 may be formed with outwardlysloping walls.
