Abstract

Pattern effects on textile materials of cellulose triacetate are obtained by locally discharging a ground colour with a reduction discharge composition comprising thiourea dioxide, zinc thiocyanate and an aromatic hydroxy carboxylic acid such as salicylic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, 2-hydroxy-3- (or 5-) methyl benzoic acid or 2:3-hydroxynaphthoic acid, and finally steaming. The composition may be printed alongside a reducing discharge composition containing a vat dye, in which case, after steaming, an oxidizing treatment with, for example, acidified bichromate or sodium percarbonate solution is applied to oxidize the leuco vat dye, and before or after the oxidation, an aqueous alkaline reducing treatment, e.g. with aqueous sodium hydrosulphite containing sodium hydroxide and, if desired, polyvinylpyrrolidone, may be applied to remove surface dye. The discharge paste may also contain polyethylene glycol, urea and thickeners. Specified ground colours are various azo dyestuffs. The triacetate fibres, which may have a high safe-ironing point, as described in Specification 758,442, [Group IV (a)], may have been wet-, dry- or melt-spun as described in Specifications 687,414, 719,853, 721,674, 726,900, 731,930 and 748,772, [all in Group IV (a)], or produced by the further acetylation of more lowly acetylated cellulose fibres, as described in Specifications 448,816, 448,817 and 448,917, [all in Group IV].
