Abstract

The surfaces of iron, stainless steel and lead are cleaned by reducing metal salts and oxides thereon with a medium containing an alkali metal or ammonium hydrosulphite and an alkali metal borohydride.ALSO:Vat dyes are reduced under conditions of aerial oxidation with a medium containing hydrosulphite ions and an alkali metal borohydride. The medium may be an aqueous solution which may also contain NH4OH or NaOH, the pH being 9.5-13. The preferred constituents are sodium or ammonium hydrosulphite and sodium borohydride. The vat dyes may be applied conventionally from a bath, continuously or as the acid leuco form using a reducing bath containing NH4OH or no alkali at all, subsequently converting to the alkali leuco form before the final oxidation and finishing. The materials to be dyed may be of natural or regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate and triacetate, polyamide, aromatic polyester or of acrylic polymers. When dyeing hydrophobic fibres carriers may be employed. Vat and azoic dyeings may be stripped with a reducing medium as above which may also contain sodium lignin sulphonate and/or polyvinyl pyrrolidone. The reducing medium may also be employed to bleach textiles and wood pulp. Examples of vat dyeing, stripping and bleaching are given; the stripping and bleaching being applied only to cotton fabrics, the dyeing to all the materials herein before listed.
