Class 73 The wiping means in a machine for applying labels to bottles comprises a series of arches attached to the frame of the machine, each carrying pairs of flexible wiper tongues 8 and 12 that contact labels applied to the neck and bodies of bottles which pass through the arches; the tongues 8 for the neck labels are adjustable vertically and are secured to the sides of the arches by a pin and slot attachment. This latter attachment consists in slots 3a cut in the sides of the arches to accommodate the square necks of bolts 7 that clamp the tongues 8 between. the arch and a clamping strip 9. The presented edges 8a of the tongues 8 are sloped to adapt them to wipe the necks of bottles and their outer vertical edges abut against vertical strips 11 on the outer edges of each arch to prevent angular movement during adjustment. Tongues 12 . which wipe the body labels are secured between clamping strips 13, Fig. 1 (not shown), and the lower sides of the arch. To ensure that the pressure of both members of each pair of the tongues 8 and 12 shall be even when the bottles are traversed along a circular path under the arches, the inner tongues are made of lesser width than the outer ones.
