Abstract
805,715. Charging and discharging batteries. POWER FREQUENCY HEATING Ltd. Nov. 22, 1956 [Aug. 30, 1956], No. 26591/56. Class 38 (4). [Also in Groups XI and XXXIV] A combined internal combustion engine heater and battery charger comprises a hollow ferrous core 1 heated by induction and connected at 9 to the sump 12 of an engine, primary and secondary coils 3, 14 wound on the core being enclosed by ferrous flanges 10 and an outer ferrous tube 11. The coil 14 is connected to a rectifier 15 of which the output may be used for charging storage batteries and the coil 3 may be energized by A.C. of 25, 33<SP>1</SP>/ 3 , 50 or 60 c.p.s. or by pulsating current. A further secondary coil may be used for lighting a pilot bulb 17 or for heating an engine component, e.g. an inlet manifold. Current is supplied via a connection 4, and a cable 18 is secured in a waterproof compression gland 19. A magnetic drain plug 13 is located in an elbow member 7 connected to the core 1. By providing a further tube within the core 1, the coolant from the engine radiator may also be heated by passage through the core. Thermostatic control may be incorporated. According to the Provisional Specification, the primary coil may be energized from a D.C. source, the primary coil circuit of the heater including a vibrator or the like.
