Abstract

792.319. Induction heating. POWER FREQUENCY HEATING, Ltd. June 16, 1955 [Feb. 18, 1955], No. 4875/55. Class 39(3) [Also in Group XXXV] A combined engine heater and battery charger comprising a core 1 which may be retained in position on a ferrous part of an engine by magnetic attraction has a tapped primary winding 3 for energization by A.C.. heat being generated by induction in the engine part. Additional means for attaching the heater-charger to the engine may be employed. A bridge rectifier 7 for providing charging current is connected to one secondary winding, and further secondary windings energize a pilot light 15 and a resistive load 16. The heater shown in Fig. 7 comprises a handle 19 incorporating a switch 20 for controlling the primary winding excitation current which is fed through conductor 9 via a quick release connections 8. Wire bundles or metallic powder may be used for the core and the pole faces may be in planes other than at right angles to the axes of the core limbs. Single or polyphase A.C. of 25, 33<SP>1</SP>/ 3 , 50 or 60 c.p.s. may be used for excitation and may be thermostatically controlled. More than one heater charger may be applied to an engine. According to the Provisional Specification, an induction heater for engines may be energized by pulsating current and may be used with non- ferrous parts of an engine to which the heater is clamped or with which the heater may be integral. The pulsating current may be produced by means of a vibrator energized by the battery of the engine. Ferrous bars or plates may extend between the poles of the heater; silicone impregnated glass and silicone varnish are specified as insulation for the windings and their formers. When a battery charging winding is embodied in the heater, tappings for producing trickle or boost charges are provided.
