Abstract
805,692. Waveguides. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 23, 1955 [Oct. 1, 1954], No. 28410/54. Class 40 (8). Waveguides of the type in which the conductive medium is in the form of a metallic film are assembled by a process of cold-welding. For this purpose the metallic film is made of a coherent, ductile metal such as indium which is coated, e.g. by electro-deposition, upon the parts to be assembled, the parts being caused to adhere by the application of pressure at a non-elevated temperature. A solid-dielectric waveguide 20 comprising a core of polystyrene coated with a suitable ductile metal 21 may be attached by cold-welding to a crystal holder 22 which is similarly coated. The holder is made of a material having the same coefficient of thermal expansion as the core of the waveguide but selected to provide good adhesion of the metallic film. The whole of the film applied to the parts may consist of cold-welding metal or only a surface layer may be so constituced. Mechanical strength is imparted to the assembly by means of a casing 25 of casting resin. Good adhesion of the metallic film may be obtained by roughening the surfaces to be coated. Fig. 7 shows in cross-section the attachment of a two-part flange 30 to a solid-dielectric waveguide 28. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 759,200.
