Abstract

The dyeability of shaped hydrophobic polymeric articles, such as fibres made from acrylonitrile polymers and polyethylene glycol terephthalate, is improved by impregnating the article with an ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising vinyl pyrrolidone, vinylbenzene-4-sulphonic acid, N-vinyl N-methyl and N-vinyl N-ethyl formamides and acetamides, N-vinyl valerolactam, N-vinyl caprolactam, acrylamide or vinyl pyridine or mixtures thereof, then polymerizing the impregnated monomer in situ in the article. Polymerization may be assisted by the addition of a catalyst such as hydrogen peroxide and potassium persulphate or, in the case of photopolymerization, riboflavin. The monomer may be applied by contacting the shaped article with a solution of the monomer, e.g. in water or diethyl ether, until the desired amount of monomer has been absorbed, followed by polymerization which may be effected with the aid of heat or light.
