Abstract

The surface properties of a hydrocarbon polymer are modified by graft polymerization by a process which involves forming free radicals on the surface of the polymer by subjecting it to an electric discharge in a gas at a pressure of up to 1 mm. Hg, and subsequently contacting the polymer with a polymerizable substance and initiating graft polymerization by means of the free radicals on the surface of the polymer. Hydrocarbon polymers specified are polyethylene and polypropylene, which may be in the form of a fabric or a powder. Polymerizable substances specified are methacrylic acid, acrylonitrile, and vinyl pyridine. The electric discharge may be supplied by a valve oscillator or a Tesla coil. After exposure to the discharge, the polymer may be contacted with the monomer immediately, or may be exposed to air to cause the formation of peroxide groups thereon. The examples describe grafting methacrylic acid on to polyethylene and polypropylene, and acrylonitrile on to polyethylene. The methacrylic acid-grafted products are dyeable with basic dyestuffs.
