Abstract

<PICT:0805471/III/1> In the production of ammonium sulphate, a feed liquor is introduced into and heated in an evaporator, and substantially unsettled magma is withdrawn from the body of the evaporator at a level above the bottom thereof to a settler to separate ammonium sulphate crystals. A feed liquor, nearly saturated with ammonium sulphate and containing free sulphuric acid is introduced through measuring device 1 into evaporator 2 at 3. The evaporator has calandria 4 for heating with central downcomer 5 and vapours are withdrawn at 6 to a vacuum pump which maintains a reduced pressure. The introduction of feed at 3 assists in keeping crystals in suspension. The withdrawal of substantially unsettled magma by pump 7 through standpipe 8 to settling cone 10 permits the removal of acid and ammonium sulphate in the same ratio as that in which they are present in the feed liquor, and the obtainment of a minimum acid concentration in the evaporator. Crystals from cone 10 tass to centrifuge 17. Overflowing mother liquor from 12 may be passed to unit 16, in which it is contacted with ammonia to form ammonium sulphate with free acid, and a proportion may be returned via liquid seal 14.
