Abstract
Crystalline urea of low biuret content is obtained by removing urea crystals from a crystallization zone in a slurry having a mother liquor high in biuret content, passing the slurry vertically downward in an elutriator in countercurrent flow to an upward flow of an aqueous solution of urea of low biuret content, separating the crystals from the mother liquor and passing the slurry after the countercurrent flow from the upper portion of the elutriator to the crystallization step. A subatmospheric pressure may be maintained over said aqueous solution containing urea and biuret during the crystallization which may be effected at 130-160 DEG F., and the rising liquid phase during countercurrent flow is suitably maintained at 130-200 DEG F. The mother liquor of the slurry from the initial separation may be combined with make-up urea solution low in biuret content and recycled to the countercurrent flow.
