Abstract
805,049. Road-traffic signals on vehicles; lamp failure alarms. HOLLINS, J. R. May 25, 1956, No. 16227/56. Class 118 (2). A pilot lamp for supervising the stop lamp circuit on vehicles is arranged so as to be illuminated only just prior to movement from rest of a vehicle or when a brake application is imminent, thus avoiding the disadvantages of a substantially continuously lit pilot lamp on the dash-board. A battery 10 supples stop lamps SL via the usual ammeter 13 and switch BS controlled by the brake pedal BP. A pilot lamp PL of high resistance and low candlepower is connected in series with a normally closed switch AS controlled by accelerator pedal AP, as shown, between the stop lamps SL and ignition switch 15. Thus the pilot lamp PL will light when the ignition switch 15 is turned on and extinguish as soon as the accelerator pedal AP is depressed. When the accelerator pedal is released prior to braking the pilot lamp will again light up, to be extinguished on depression of the brake pedal BP (when switch BS effectively short-circuits the lamp PL). On failure of stop lamps SL, or the wiring thereto, the pilot lamp PL will fail to light, and if there is an earth fault on the stop lamp supply circuit the pilot lamp PL will remain lit when the brakes are applied. Specification 637,835, [Group XXIX], is referred to.
