In a machine for cleaning or polishing floors comprising a body mounted on wheels or castors, and one or more power-driven working members such as brushes or polishing pads mounted to oscillate, rotate or circulate about substantially vertical axes, the working member(s) is mounted on a subordinate frame or support 18 carrying a driving motor, and connected to the body of the machine by means whereby it can tilt relatively to said body to enable the working face(s) of the working member(s) to accommodate itself to undulations or irregularities in the floor. Said means may permit tilting simultaneously about lateral and longitudinal axes of the machine. There may be means on the machine for varying the pressure exerted on the floor by the brushes. In the form shown the subordinate frame 18 is connected by one or more trailing links 25 (to tilt laterally), mounted on rods 24 of a further framework 22, itself connected to the body 10 at two positions 16, 17, lying in a substantially horizontal plane, at each of which is a barrel-shaped member 30 attached to a rod 24 and tiltable in its bracket 16 or 17. Thus the frame 22 can tilt about an axis longitudinal of the body 10. In each member 16 and 17 there is a pair of balls 34 in holes 32 adjoining a cylindrical bore therein, which act as trunnion-like members, each under the action of a spring 35, to engage with a circumferential groove 31 in the member 30. The frame 18 has three non-collinear brackets 26, 26, 29 on the upper surface thereof, the brackets 26 being connected to the links 25 and the third to the framework 22 by arms 27. Alternatively it may be connected to the body 10 by a number of coiled tension or leaf springs. By means of a cam lever 36 to which is pivotally connected an arm 37, pivotally connected to a bracket 38, the working face(s) of the working member(s) is raised off the floor. The cam lever 36 acts against a bar 39. A container 13 for cleansing or polishing substance (e.g. a detergent liquid) to be dispersed over the surface treated, may be supplied.
