Abstract

804,401. Gas-blast switches. ALLIS-CHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 30,1956 [Sept. 13, 1955], No. 26574/56. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXIX] In a gas-blast switch, means are provided to exert on the blast valve a substantial portion of the force necessary to open the valve, so that the contact operating means only have to provide the remaining portion of the force. In the arrangement shown, the energizing of a solenoid 97 causes an armature 95 to turn a lever 91 clockwise to unlock a pilot valve 84 for operation by the leakage of compressed air past a main valve member 83. The valve member 83 is then operated by the resulting pressure differential and admits compressed air to a pipeline 28. Air from the pipeline 28 acts on a piston 20 to apply to the blast valve 18 the substantial portion of the force necessary to open it. Air from the pipeline 28 also acts on a valve element 33 which opens an outlet port 32 for the supply of compressed air to the contacts " opening " motor 16 and at the same time the element 33 oversets a toggle 36 to position a roller 61 in the path of movement of a cam 60 on the contacts-operating shaft 40, so that as the motor 16 commences to turn the shaft 40, the cam 60 through a lever 37 applies the remaining portion of the force necessary to open the blast valve 18 to the valve 18 which is opened. When the piston 48 of the motor 16 passes a port 59, compressed air is supplied to the underside of a piston 103, the upward motion of which causes the anticlockwise rotation of the lever 91 to close the pilot valve 84. The resulting closing of the main valve member 83 stops the supply of compressed air to the motor 16 and to the valve 33, the blast valve 18 having already been closed by air acting through a port 63 when the cam 60 left the roller 61. Should the solenoid remain energized, the piston 103 is magnetically held in its upper position to prevent any further opening of the pilot valve. The closing of the contacts is effected by a motor 70 controlled by a solenoid-operated valve assembly 69 similar to that described above, no closing blast being provided.
