Abstract

Catalyst remnants are removed from a polymer slurry obtained in the low-pressure polymerization of polymerizable olefins and diolefins by adding to the polymer slurry a substance capable of converting the catalyst remnants present in the polymer slurry into a product which is insoluble at elevated temperatures in the solvent used for the polymerization reaction, whereupon the hot polymer solution is freed from the insolubilized catalyst remnants. Specified polymers are those of ethylene, propylene, butylene and butadiene. Specified insolubilizing materials are alkali metal and alkali earth metal hydroxides or carbonates, e.g. calcium hydroxide, terrana, and fuller's earth. The temperature of the insolubilization reaction may be from 100-250 DEG C. while the hot polymer solution after being freed from the insolubilized catalyst remnants may be evaporated with the aid of a film evaporator.
