Abstract
Polymer associated with solid catalyst and which has been produced in a low-pressure olefin polymerization is treated with an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution, the dissolved catalyst separated and the polymer recovered. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, 1-pentene, butadiene, ethylene-propylene and ethylene-butadiene, the catalyst being chromium oxide, containing hexavalent chromium, associated with one oxide selected from silica, alumina, zirconia and thoria. Sodium and potassium are the specified alkali metals, and the digestion may take place at least 150 DEG F. for at least 30 minutes. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
