Abstract

804,273. Amphibious craft. SESSIONS, D. W. Feb. 24, 1956 [March 31, 1955], No. 9407/55. Classes 113 and 114. In a craft comprising two hollow hulls 1, 2, each with a seat 12 and a crank device (having pedals 41) mounted therein and having at least three road wheels, at least one of which is adapted for steering, the crank device is operatively connected to water propulsion means and to at least one road wheel. In the embodiment of Figs. 2, 4, 5 two hulls are connected by a decking 3 and each houses a road wheel 7 in a casing 15. A steering wheel 8 is connected to a road wheel 9 supported by a strut 27 between the hulls. Each crank device is connected by chains and sprocket 17 to a spindle 19 which carries a water propulsion wheel 6. The sinuous and continuous side to side thrust of the rotating lower (i.e. immersed) portion of the wheel 6 produces a propulsive action similar to the movements of a fishes tail or the blade of a sculling oar. The spindle 19 is also connected through gearing 20, 21 to drive the road wheel 7. The wheel 9 is carried by a fork member 28 and is used as a rudder, for which purpose it is provided with a streamlined casing 30.
