804,161. Photo-electric control arrangements. ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH) Ltd. July 5, 1955 [July 27, 1954], No. 21856/54. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XVII] An arrangement for detecting the absence from its correct position of one of a spaced succession of articles being forwarded comprises a light source and photo-cell so arranged relative to the articles that light from the source can reach the cell to actuate control mechanism only when the normal spacing between successive articles is exceeded. The container filling machine shown in Fig. 1 comprises a chain 12 carrying at equally spaced locations containers 11 and engaging a wheel to which hoppers 16 are attached so that each container location comes adjacent a hopper at filling station 14. At this point wedge 19 engages roller 18 to empty the hopper provided a container is in the location. If the container is missing the wedge is retracted from its operative position as follows. A beam of light 23 is projected across the line of motion of the containers towards photocell 24 at such an angle that so long as each container position is occupied no light reaches the cell, but if a container is missing light reaches it to energize, via amplifier 26, solenoid 28 to retract wedge 19. In an alternative arrangement light from a source is directed across the path of the containers to a mirror and thence back to a photo-cell, the angle of projection being such as to satisfy the conditions previously referred to.
