803,872. Treating edges of fabrics. KIRKLEES, Ltd. March 29, 1957 [April 18, 1956], No. 11739/56. Class 42 (1). In a method of protecting the frayable edges of articles, e.g. " yellow dusters," cut from a length of woven fabric, the length of fabric of the desired width is folded or plated, compressed and then cut a quarter of the way in from each fold or pleat to form three piles of pieces of fabric, each piece being of equal length, the edges of the piles then being singed with a gas flame before being sprayed with a thermoplastic material which is allowed to dry before the pieces of fabric are passed separately through a hot rotary calender to cure the thermoplastic material and heat seal the edges. The thermoplastic material may be in the form of a red lacquer and may be sprayed under pressure by the adjustment of which the depth of penetration of the thermoplastic material into the fabric may be controlled. The calender may be provided with a baked coating of polytetrafluorethylene to prevent sticking and is used at a temperature in excess of 150‹ C.
