Abstract

663,732. Compound fabrics ; agglutinated fibrous materials. GLOVER, B. M. Dec. 3, 1948 [Dec. 13, 1947], No. 32900/47. Class 140. Textile material, suitable for use instead of woven cloth in the making of garments, is made by passing wool, hair, cotton, or like fibrous materials or a mixture of any such materials through a scribbling machine and, as the resultant web or layer emerges and is laid up in superposed layers on the moving platform of a Blamires type feed, spraying each layer by means of a spray gun or guns with a fine mistlike spray of plastic material in liquid form, e.g. an aqueous dispersion of polyvinyl chloride, the laying-up process continuing until a desired thickness is reached, the whole being then subjected to treatment by pressure and heat in order to compress the material to the thickness of cloth and at the same time cause the plastic material to set or gel, and by so doing spot weld the individual hairs or fibres together at the points of contact so that the material retains the same density when'the pressure is released. The pressure and heat treatment may be carried out by passing the material between a slowly rotated metal roller, internally heated by steam, and a metal shoe, having a polished inner face, comprising a rotary steam press.
