Abstract

803,836. Centrifugal pumps. SVENSKA AEROPLAN A. B. Aug. 2, 1956 [Aug. 6, 1955], No. 23824/56. Class 110 (1). [Also in Group XXIX] Aircraft fuel pumps 9a, 9b, 9c, 9d, Fig. 1, connected in parallel to a common delivery line 10, are driven by separate hydraulic motors 6a, 6b, 6c, 6d which are supplied with motive fluid by an engine-driven variable-delivery hydraulic pump 1, and a valve mechanism 5 connects the motors successively to the pump 1 in such a way that as soon as one motor has reached the optimum speed range of its fuel pump, a further motor is put into operation, and conversely the motors are successively disconnected as the speeds fall below the optimum range. The motors exhaust to a common line 8 which returns the fluid by way of a reservoir 2 to the inlet of the pump 1. The valve mechanism 5 comprises an inlet 13, Fig. 2, from the pump 1 and outlets 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d to the motors 6a, 6b, 6c, 6d respectively. Fluid flows to the motor 6a through a metering nozzle 19a in a spring-loaded valve 17a. When the flow reaches a value corresponding to the optimum speed range of the motor 6a, it moves the valve 17a to uncover a passage 14a admitting fluid by way of a valve 17b to the motor 6b. As the flow from the pump 1 further increases, passages 14b and 14c are successively opened to admit fluid to the motors 6c and 6d respectively. If the flow increases sufficiently, valve 17d is moved to uncover a relief passage 14. With decreasing flow the motors are disconnected in the reverse order. Instead of being responsive to flow or dynamic pressure, the valve mechanism may be made directly responsive to the speed of the motors. In this case, the valves are actuated by centrifugal governors on the shafts of the motors. Instead of stopping when the valves are closed, the motors may be run at an idling speed by means of fluid leaking past the valves or admitted through separate passages. The pumps may be provided with non-return valves.
