Abstract

A lubricating grease composition comprises a major proportion of a lubricating oil thickened with an alkaline earth metal base neutralized mixture of one or more C12-C30 carboxylic acids, one or more C1-C3 carboxylic acids and phosphoric acid, the phosphoric acid being employed in an amount from 2.5 to 10 per cent by weight based on the total composition, and the mol. ratio of C1-C3 carboxylic acid to C12-C30 carboxylic acid being from 10 : 1 to 30 : 1. The C12-C30 carboxylic acids mentioned are lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, mono- and polyhydroxystearic, arachidic, oleic and ricinoleic acids, as well as hydrogenated fish oil and tallow acids. The C1-C3 carboxylic acids mentioned are formic, acetic, propionic, chloroacetic, glycollic and thioglycollic acids and glycine. The mixture of acids may be neutralized with the hydroxides or carbonates of calcium, barium, magnesium or strontium. The lubricating oil may be mineral or synthetic, or a mixture of both. Synthetic lubricating oils mentioned include alkyl esters of mono- and di-carboxylic acids, esters of glycols (e.g. C13 oxo acid diester of tetraethylene glycol), complex esters, sulphite esters or esters of phosphoric acid (e.g. the sulphite or phosphate ester of the mono-methyl ether of ethylene glycol), halocarbon oils, polysiloxanes, carbonate esters, mercaptals, formals, polyglycols or their ethers, and mixtures of these. The lubricating grease composition may also contain oxidation inhibitors (e.g. phenyl alpha naphthylamine), corrosion inhibitors (e.g. sorbitan mono-oleate) and tackiness agents (e.g. polybutene or polymerized acrylic esters). The lubricating grease composition may also be dehydrated or homogenized at high rates of shear. In the examples, lubricating grease compositions are prepared from acetic acid, stearic acid, phosphoric acid, hydrated lime, phenyl alpha naphthylamine and mineral lubricating oil.
