Abstract

803,239. Automatic voltage control systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 7, 1955 [Oct. 11, 1954], No. 28621/55. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXXIX] In a voltage regulator using magnetic amplifiers in cascade the connection between the D.C. output of a first magnetic amplifier and a control winding of a second magnetic amplifier inchides a rectifier the voltage across which is used to energize a negative feedback winding on the first amplifier. As shown, the output of an auto-self-excited bridge rectifying amplifier L2 is applied to a bridge rectifier W5 which is said to prevent A.C. being fed back from the control winding of a second magnetic amplifier L1. Feedback winding 9 of the amplifier L2 is connected across the rectifier 8 in the bridge W5 and as rectifier 8 has high resistance for low forward current and a lowering resistance with increasing forward current the feedback is non-linear. The output of amplifier L1 is rectified at W1 and applied to a load R1, R2, a voltage tapped from R2 being compared with a constant voltage source CVS and the difference providing an input to amplifier L2. The source CVS may be a regulator as described in Specification 745,796. The voltage from resistor R2 is adjusted to equal that of CVS when the load is at a minimum and the voltage supplied by transformer T1 is at a maximum, for which same conditions the negative feedback is adjusted by means of resistor R3 to give minimum output from amplifier L2. Specification 803,241, [Group XXXIX], also is referred to.
