Abstract

802,958. Door chains. WILMOT-BREEDEN, Ltd. Jan. 25, 1957 [Nov. 2, 1955], No. 31316/55. Class 44 Relates to safety devices for attachment to the doors of vehicles to prevent a door from opening sufficiently to admit of a child falling out of the vehicle. According to the invention, the device comprises the combination of a first fastening means 6 adapted to be attached to the free edge part 10 of the door or to a relatively fixed part of the vehicle body which is opposite the free edge part when the door is closed, a housing 12 adapted to be attached to the complementary part, a cable, cord, strip or the like 19 which is resiliently urged into the housing and has one end retained therein, and a second fastening means 20 formed on or secured to the other end of the cable, cord, strip or the like which projects from the housing and which is adapted for engagement with the first fastening means 6. As shown the fastening means 6 is in the form of a headed stud which is resiliently secured to the part 10 by the co-operation of a pin 7 with a cam piece 8, against a rubber or like sleeve 9. The head of the stud is spaced from the part 10 by a washer 11 to permit engagement with the fastening means 20. The housing 12 is similarly secured to the other part by a stud 13. The cable 19 may be mounted on a spring-loaded drum within the housing, or, as shown, is withdrawn from the housing against a compression spring 22. In another arrangement, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the cable is in the form of a spiral spring strip, the inner end of which is anchored to the stud 13, and the outer end of which carries a block which is engageable with a forked bracket replacing the stud assembly 6-9.
