Abstract

802,689. Crimping yarns and filaments. BRITISH NYLON SPINNERS, Ltd. Aug. 20, 1956 [Aug. 6, 1955], No. 22697/55. Class 120(3) Continuous filaments and yarn (monofils and multifils) consisting at least mainly of a synthetic linear condensation polymer, e.g. a polyurea, polyurethane, polyester, polytriazole, or polyamide, the filaments being of " vacuolar " form such as defined and described in Specification 785,978 [Group IV(a)] are crimped by passage over and in contact with one or more edges whilst under tension, e.g. at least “ grm/denier, and at a temperature of between 15‹C. below the melting point of the polymer and 125‹C., e.g. 170-230‹C., so that the filaments are bent over or round the edge(s) through an angle followed by relaxation of the filaments prior or subsequent to weaving or knitting into a fabric or garment. According to an example, a stocking knitted from unrelaxed filaments is immersed and agitated in cold water the temperature of which is slowly raised to and maintained at boiling point to develop the crimp in the filaments without setting thereof. The edge(s), i.e. the slightly blunt ridge(s) of any angular body, may be formed by two converging planes joined by a cylindrical surface of small radius, e.g. 0.00004-0.0006 inch, to which the planes are tangential and the filaments approach the cylindrical surface making an angle of 20-30 degrees with one plane adjacent thereto, are bent through an angle of at least 170 degrees and leave the edge making grazing contact or a very small angle with the other plane. Specifications 558,297 and 761,804 also are referred to.
