Abstract
Dimethyl ether formed as an undesirable byproduct during the manufacture of methyl acrylate or methacrylate by esterification of the corresponding acid and/or amide with methanol in a strongly acid medium is retained within the reaction system by scrubbing the reaction gases, after condensing the bulk of the ester, with at least one of the reactants to absorb the dimethyl ether which is re-cycled in the absorbed condition. This inhibits the continued formation of ether and permits a higher esterification temperature. Apparatus are described for reacting the sulphuric acid mixture resulting from the hydrolysis of acrylonitrile with methanol to give methyl acrylate, and absorbing the dimethyl ether formed in the inflowing methanol or sulphuric acid mixture.
