Abstract
Sulphur is extracted from an aqueous suspension thereof by adding a water-insoluble liquid of density greater than that of the aqueous suspending medium to the aqueous suspension and subjecting the two liquids to centrifugal separation. The water-insoluble liquid may be a non-solvent for sulphur, or a solvent therefor either in the cold, e.g. carbon disulphide, or when heated, e.g. 1 : 2-dichloroethane, 1 : 2- or 1 : 3-dichloropropane, trichloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride, and perchloroethylene, and chlorobenzenes, chlorotoluenes, and chloroxylenes, including mixtures containing dichloro, trichloro, and tetrachloro isomers. A wetting agent may be added to the aqueous suspension. Other suspended material may be separated from the sulphur, when using an extracting liquid which is a non-solvent for the said material, by a fractional separation in the cold in a single centrifuge when the liquid is a solvent for sulphur in the cold, or a single separation in the cold in one centrifuge followed by a single separation at an elevated temperature in a second centrifuge when the liquid is a solvent for sulphur only at an elevated temperature. The sulphur may be recovered from the extracting liquid by ordinary or steam distillation of the solvent. Solvent may similarly be removed from admixture with separated impurities. The aqueous suspension may be produced by the treatment of hydrogen sulphide-containing gas with an aqueous solution of a ferric salt. After extraction the aqueous suspension may be used for the further treatment of hydrogen sulphide-containing gas.
