Abstract

802,144. Gas turbine plant. HOBSON, Ltd., H. M., GREENLAND, L. S., McCOURTY, W. D., and JOHNSON, V. H. March 6, 1956 [May 2, 1955], No. 12697/55. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXIX] A control unit for preventing the supply of excessive fuel to a gas turbine engine during acceleration comprises a fuel metering valve controlled by the compressor delivery pressure of the engine and a pressure-regulating valve arranged to prevent the pressure drop across the metering valve from exceeding a predetermined value. In an embodiment, the metering valve 15 is carried by a spring-loaded servo-piston 14 above which is a chamber 7 connected through a filter 19 and restricted orifice 5 to the inlet 1 of the unit and provided with.an escape passage 6 controlled by a valve member carried by a pivoted beam 8 which is loaded by springs 10, 11 and acted upon by an evacuated capsule 9 having a negative rate and subject externally to compressor delivery pressure admitted through an opening 24. The spring 12 that loads the servo-piston 14 reacts on the beam 8 which carries a sealing ring 18 and is pivoted on ball bearings (not shown) about an axis passing through the sealing ring 18. To avoid obstruction to the fuel flow on starting or when the unit has failed the metering valve is waisted at 27 so that a clear passage for the fuel is presented when the metering valve is urged downwardly against a stop 17 by the spring 12. By suitably profiling the metering valve any desired relation between maximum fuel flow and compressor delivery pressure may be ob tained. A valve member 3 situated at the outlet of the metering valve is urged towards open position by a spring 21 and in the opposite direction by the pressure drop across the metering valve acting on a diaphragm 28. The valve member 3 acts to throttle the flow in the event of the said pressure drop exceeding a certain value. In a modification, the valve member 3 is of double beat construction. Specification 802,143 is referred to.
